Humber Scout Car MK1

IMG_2118.JPG

Our Humber scout car was bought from a Dutch collection back in late 2009. Since then, the vehicle has been awaiting restoration but not forgotten about!

Over recent years, a number of other examples have begun to be restored and the missing parts, common to many of these, have started to be manufactured.

Following the completion of our universal carrier, the scout car is next in line for restoration with an ambition for it to attend the 2029 Market Garden commemorations.

This is an exceptionally complete example that was recovered, along with five others, from Pounds scrapyard in Portsmouth by John Marchant back in February 1973. Soon after, this vehicle was sold to the Dutch collection from which it came to us.

The six examples recovered from Pounds had all had the rear armour torched off as a means to quickly recover the radiators. The rear armour currently tied to the rear of this example has been cut from another vehicle.

Original markings can still be seen on this vehicle in its current state and provide insight into its service.

This Humber served with the Headquarters squadron of the 2nd Fife and Forfar Yeomanry, 29th Armoured Brigade, 11th Armoured Division.

The "Black Bull" and formation marking "53" can still be seen on the lower glacis panel. Lucky, as many vehicles can be seen in service with the markings painted on the wing bins, which this example is missing.

The combination of these markings and the blue diamond found in 3 places on the vehicle certify its provenance.

Also visible on the upper glacis plate is the often overlooked "THIS VEHICLE IS FILLED WITH ANTI-FREEZE 1/2-2/3 AND MUST NOT BE DRAINED" marking.

While no photographs have yet been found of this vehicle in service, it remains part of a very well documented armoured regiment.
